Mammoth Caves National Park

Grand Central StationToday I added to my UNESCO World Heritage List with my visit to the Mammoth Caves National Park in Kentucky.

The last UNESCO World Heritage site I visited was just a couple weeks ago when I was at home in Weimar; the site previous to that which would actually count, as a tourist, was the stop at the Cradle of Humankind in Jo’burg with CQ. Oddly enough, both are caves.

Two and a half hours southeast of Evansville, Indiana, the national park makes for a nice day-trip. The New Entrance Tour was a two hour tour that went in the side of a sinkhole and then straight down into what they call “Grand Central Station,” which was so named because so many subterranean tunnels meet in the cave, thus allowing access to a number of parts. As I recall, there are six tunnels meeting at the junction, which makes it a shadow of Grand Central Station in New York City.
