Mainz

My sister is on her way back to the States, and I am home from our trip to Mainz.

Mainz was a principle destination for my sister, for it was home to Johannes Gutenberg and the Gutenberg Museum. As much as I like books, I should have taken Lonely Planet as a warning when it casually states that “you’ll encounter a bewildering display of printed books and documents.”

And we did-I felt that the museum was poorly thought out and frustrating, for at the entrance they had announcements in three languages, but as soon as you got into the displays the announcements were only in German, except in the parts for China and Japan, where you could get English translations. No translation was available for the Korean section, oddly-despite the fact that it was in the same wing as the Chinese and Japanese section. I’d even asked for an English translation at the front desk, and the woman looked through a filing cabinet behind her finding nothing.

That said, it was nice seeing the Gutenberg Bibles.

We spent the rest of the time wandering Mainz and then sleeping, before catching an early train from Mainz to the Frankfurt Airport, where she checked in and I waved at her as she crossed through immigration.

I caught a packed train from Frankfurt to Weimar-so full that I was sitting in a vestibule instead of a seat.
