My Apartment: die Küche

As an American, one of the harder things to wrap my head around is the fact that most apartments in Germany (or shall I say, my part of Germany) do not come with kitchens – so when I was apartment hunting a year ago, I quickly learned that “EBK” next to an apartment meant “Einbauküche”—or built in kitchen.

My apartment has an EBK—and I give mad props to the designer who put the under the counter refrigerator directly next to the oven.

It’s not the world’s largest kitchen and there really isn’t enough storage space but it is cheerful, light, and functional. Meanwhile I’m often in my own cabinet where I keep the dishes and in the pantry where I keep all of the non-refrigerated ingredients like flour, sugar, and oats.

AMAZING light. The stove/fridge thing is really an amateur mistake though (not your fault of course). Could you not have it switched with the set of drawers? And have you never gotten an electric bill here yet?! How crazy is that to put the coldest and hottest thing next to each other? I’m guessing your landlord or previous tenant just had the stove for show and didn’t cook much.

If that was my kitchen all those little tiles with pictures on them would soon be smeared with my blood and I would be likely to die of head injuries. I cannot be trusted with such obstacles as slanted ceilings. So as much as I like the penthouse view, it is not meant to be

Like how much light there is. But am sure that I would constantly be hitting my head on the slant trying to bend down over the sink. Hmm.
