Drill Site for Wagon Wheel, a nuclear stimulation project
proposed for Wyoming in the late 1960s and early 1970s. |
Welcome
to the Wagon Wheel Web Site.
Warning: This site is
under development.
Most aspects are still incomplete.
In
the early 1960s the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) of the United
States of America decided it was time to develop peaceful uses for
nuclear weapons, "Project Plowshare." A number of
proposals were put forward, including nuclear stimulation, the
idea to use nuclear weapons to help free natural gas from tight
sandstone formations. The testing of this particular project
was carried out in three western and rural states: New Mexico,
Colorado, and Wyoming. This web site explores the
development of this technology across all three states and four
sites, as well as the response of the people in Pinedale, Wyoming,
to the proposed nuclear plowshare project for their neighborhood,
"Project Wagon Wheel."
Please
note, download times for this web site may be long
due to large
picture files.
The images provided on this site help
tell the story of Wagon Wheel.
All images are in the public domain, many acquired from
US Government Documents concerning
Project Wagon Wheel and other Project Plowshare programs.
