Wyoming Athletics

As many of you are aware, I’m somewhat crazy about the University of Wyoming-to the point where there are several people who are under the mistaken impression that I am actually from Wyoming.

No doubt this is reinforced by the “GO WYO” license plates that I have had both here in Indiana and back in Colorado.

Anyway, one of the symptoms of this Wyoming addiction has been my subscription to wireless updates about Cowboy Sports News-a feature that in recent months I’ve come to ignore most of the time. It’s really most useful when the teams are playing football or basketball and I can get score updates throughout the game no matter where I am.

For some reason, today I happened to read a message that said, “UW Football Program Faces Critical Attendance Challenge.” I was intrigued.

So I went back to the Wyoming Athletics web site and read the article.

It seems that they are having trouble averaging 15,000 average attendance at home games in Laramie. They blame the most recent season’s woes on three home games in November-not a completely unfair assessment. Wyoming is incredibly cold in November, and the occasional snow storm can make getting to the game tricky.

I suspect that the 3-5 record entering November didn’t help the cause.

They ended the season 4-8, and I hate to say it, but Cowboy fans, like most others are often the most excited when the teams are winning.

I wish the Cowboys the best at increasing the average attendance this year-they have their wish in that there’s only one home game in November. All they need to do is pull together a winning team and they should be able to do it easily.

Meanwhile, I think that making all the members of the “Project 20K Committee” attend the games will go a long way toward solving the problem. That committee is incredibly large by my count–too large to accomplish anything.

Random Thought: The text messaging system does not appear to support anything but US based cell phones and does not have an option for using an email address. I guess I will stop getting scores once I move to Germany. That’s a dumb mistake on the part of their provider.

Did they renovate the stadium since I’ve been there. I seem to remember capcity being 30,000. Laramie, at best, has a population around 30,000 when the students are there, the nearest “large” city is Cheyenne at, what 70,000? Then you have the issue of fans not living in Laramie having to drive minmum 50 miles to get to the games. They’d be lucky to get 10,000 to attend IMHO. I do wish them well on their goal tough.
