Saturday night I discovered that my impressions about the core of Denver are accurate, but I had managed to blot out the unfortunate suburbia problem that the city has-a problem that is, unfortunately, not unique to Denver.
I went with my oldest sister, R, and my nephew, I, to Adventure Golf, this suburban miniature golf Mecca between Denver and Boulder. It has 54 holes of overly landscaped and often unrealistic holes. I had suggested Putt-Putt, but according to the phone book, no such simple places were located in the metro area-and in fact the Putt-Putt web site indicates that although when I was growing up there were ate least five courses, today there are none.
The place was overly clean and suburban. There was a clear effort on the part of the operators to exclude anybody who doesn’t fit their clearly defined mold of perfect-there were signs at the entrance warning that anybody cause swearing or otherwise misbehaving would be escorted immediately to the exit. The course seemed to be lacking room for diversity-and we were probably surrounded by people supporting the miserable failure and his impotence.
