Notes from today:
Happy December everybody! Santa Claus visits America on the 25th!
I had two helpings of Glühwein with friends from the German course. Glühwein is warm wine-I believe it is technically mulled wine, but I’m not that sure.
Katya in Erfurt had a much worse experience than I had last weekend (her left knee was broken), so I went to visit her bringing along with me fresh baked Chocolate Chip Cookies. She’s using sticks (as she called them, crutches to Americans) for awhile and not moving very fast-although she said she had doubled her speed from yesterday to today.
Speaking of yesterday: I saw the two films I mentioned in yesterday’s blog. “Before Stonewall” is a documentary about gay life before the Stonewall Riots in 1969. It’s rather shocking to realize that nobody was really out of the closet back then-and, in a clip I had seen before somewhere, an older lesbian recalls the first time she had been in a room with other lesbians-12 of them! It brought back memories of my first time in a room with other gay people. “Stonewall” was a camp film with a bit too much violence near the end, and not enough at the end. I never would have bothered to see it in America, but nevertheless, I was happy to see it.
So… I stayed home this morning because my dryer needs more repairs (it works, but it is tipsy). The repair man called me-thankfully he spoke a little English, and informed me that they were not coming today because they had decided to order me a new motor for my dryer. They will be calling me in 5 or 6 working days to schedule a time to fix the dryer.
I used the time to bake the aforementioned Chocolate Chip Cookies and clean the kitchen. For some reason my oven is rather slow- what should have taken 5-10 minutes to bake, took more like 20. Next time I will increase the temperature a wee bit. I think I will undertake more cooking projects. I’m getting more and more comfortable with things here, so why not?
I saw “Stonewall” in 1997 at the Student Union on the Texas Tech campus. Although the camp quotient was quite high, it was an opportunity to see other gay people in a setting apart from the one gay bar in that city of 200,000. The attendance at the film was so high that people were standing in the back of the room…
