There are things in the States that I am no longer used to, and they are annoying!
First, I almost lost my bank card in the ATM machine. In Germany, your card is returned to you before your cash is released, so Monday morning after I took out $100, I left the machine. Fortunately nobody was in line after me, and my next stop was only a few feet away, so when the machine started beeping, I realized why. My card was not swallowed. The German approach is far better.
Second, after dodging shopping carts in the parking lot at Kroger, I’m thinking that making people put coins into shopping carts and then returning the carts to a centralized location makes a lot of sense. I felt kind of lost without the mechanism.
Finally, tipping. I accidentally left a 10% tip for a really great waitress. 10% in Germany is a lot, but in the States is not. I wouldn’t say Germany is better, except that it costs less. On the other hand, waitresses are better paid in Germany.
