I was stupid tonight.
I had about twenty minutes to kill, so I stopped in Einstein’s, a bar in Jena, for a beer.
As I walked into the bar, I had just purchased two English language novels and talked to somebody in English on the phone, so when I sat down at the bar, I knew there was a specific beer that I wanted, so I asked for it.
“Ein Hopfgarten, bitte.”
After I said it, it occurred to me that there was something wrong with what I said—namely, I couldn’t remember the name of the beer I wanted, and then the staff started talking to me in English, which was nice, but didn’t help me remember the name of the beer I wanted, so I took a wheat beer and started looking at the books I had purchased.
Ten minutes later I realized I had wanted to order a Hoegaarten, which is an absolutely fantastic Belgian beer, and not the first train station west of Weimar on the way to Erfurt.
