Caterpillar Footwear

Last Thursday I noted, if you bothered to read, that I needed new shoes.

So Thursday evening I went out, off to Saturn to look to see if I could buy the Eurovision CD in person, and then off to a shoe store. Saturn was open but lacked the CD, so I eventually wandered off looking for the shoe store where I had spotted interesting looking shoes before.

Unfortunately it had closed at 7, so I was unable to pursue new shoes that evening.

That left me still looking for shoes on Friday.

As it happens, Friday evening I was going to a party in Jena, so I left work a bit before the party and went hunting for shoes—one of the really cool stores that had shoes I wanted in the window, was already closed at 7 when I showed up, so I kept looking.

Ultimately I found the Caterpillar Shoes at Danny Shoes in Neue Mitte mall. The shoes were on sale for only 60€, marked down from the original 100€ price.

Whilst they aren’t non-American shoes—they are, after all, shoes licensed by Caterpillar, the construction machinery company, they are not white—instead they’re grey.

It’s a small step toward blending in with the locals.

That’s one small step for Adam, one giant leap for mankind! Cool shoes, they look silver to me. Certainly not American white. 🙂

So what you’re saying is that if I brig my grey/silver pair of Nike’s with me on my Europe trip I’ll blend in.

As for you small step to blending in with the locals… I thought you would have taken many more considering you have been living there for two years!

It’s funny, Adam, this situation you had with the shoes. Strangely enough, I had a similar problem here in Bloomington. I wanted to go to a White Party, but realized I owned absolutely no pairs of white shoes whatsoever, so I had to go out and buy a pair. I guess maybe I don’t fit in with “Americans” very well, and I’ve been one all my life!!!! Heh. Or maybe that’s just the straight ones with which I can’t blend in?!

  • Certain things signal a higher probability of being an American, just visually. White shoes is one of them. Locals do wear white shoes, just not very often…

The shoes step is one of the harder ones, since it goes against all the white shoes we’ve worn since being little kids.

Except for Mateo.. who’s European without realizing it.
