Here in London, much of the news about Beckham going to America focuses on two things: (1) How much money is involved; and (2) How Beckham going to America will transform soccer making it popular in America.
My responses: (1) Good for Beckham’s bank account, bad investment by the owners of the LA Galaxy (is there any more aspirational name in professional sport?); and (2) There have been a lot of other so-called critical transforming points that were supposed to make soccer popular—I fail to see how hiring an aging athlete that Americans only know as “that Spice girl’s husband” is going to be any different from previous experiments.
Really I would only watch Soccer if they played in the nude. It makes me sick to think just how much money goes to athletes while no money to rebuild New Orleans can be found.
Beckham will do for Football in America as much good as Pele did.
What will “Posh” do when she realizes the the L.A. paparazzi only bother with you if you leave your panties at home?

I think the rest of the world doesn’t realize that the USA is wrapped up in their own sports (Baseball, American Football, Basketball, and NASCAR). We don’t even know what soccer is here other than a sport kids play.
Oddly, our country was mesmerized by a nearly decade deceased princess from the UK. I never got why people here are so taken with the British royal family… We fought a war to tell ’em to go to hell after all.

Beckham might be cute and I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity do do… well, never mind exactly what, but I don’t see how he could possibly transform soccer making it as popular as ice hockey in the USA, never mind baseball, basketball or football (the American kind).
As for NASCAR… well, never mind.
