Due to the windy weather, I just got back from a quick drive to Frankfurt.
I made the quick trip to Frankfurt (total time out of the car in the city: 60 seconds) because the long-haul trains were not working today and somebody had to be in Frankfurt tonight, but did not want to drive.
Since I don’t mind driving, I got in the rented Ford Galaxy and drove. It’s a car with all of the downsides of a mini-van and none of the upsides, unless you the fact that it was a diesel manual six-speed with the reverse in a tricky spot to find. I didn’t particularly like it since it had a high profile thus making it susceptible to being pushed around by the winds.
Headed to Frankfurt there were no problems with the traffic, but we did see a lot of trees that had been blown over, and in a few spots, the highway crew were still cleaning up trees that had fallen onto the highway.
However, coming back I hit a huge traffic jam that took me something like 45 minutes to get through—the three hours from Jena to Frankfurt, turned into nearly four hours to go from Frankfurt to Weimar (about 15 km closer). The traffic was so bad that I witnessed the fellow to the left take a piss break by the side of the road.
I made up some time on the return: going to Frankfurt I pretty much stayed at 130kph or slower; coming home I hit 160 a few times (suffice it to say, I was still passed quite a bit).
