Boy Culture

I happen to be in New York City for the release of the film Boy Culture, based off of a novel by Matthew Rettenmund that I read a long time ago and enjoyed.

After having been rejected and prevented from buying shoes because my signature was “too short” (I thought, at the time, that too short meant I wasn’t taking enough space up in the box, later I realized that my signature wasn’t “too short,” it was “too quick”), I headed to the Quad Cinema for the 1pm showing of the film.

It was well attended.

Since I was unaware that the film was about to be released, I had not reread the book in preparation. I have no idea if this was a good or bad thing, but I remembered the basic idea of the book, and I have to say that I really enjoyed the film. It was really sweetly done and interesting: it actually said something interesting about the nature of gay men and how gay male culture is spread and shared. It accurately critiqued said behavior—and left me thinking.

The film also had a number of fantastic comic moments that made the entire audience laugh—I am now forever stuck with the image of a Dorito with Frosting.
