Straddling Oceans

Tomorrow morning CQ and I will leave Cape Town; fly to Johannesburg in order to drive into Swaziland for two nights in a grass hut.

I will probably not post again until either Sunday evening or Monday night.

In the meantime I thought I would share a few thoughts about our trip so far.

Monday morning we bought our tickets to Robben Island for Tuesday and then headed, the long way, to the Cape of Good Hope. I got us lost, but we crossed the quite beautiful Chapman’s Peak Road and stumbled into Boulder’s Beach in Simon’s Town, where we visited with the little men in tuxedos. They were quite adorable. After that we headed to the Cape of Good Hope, where we took the funicular up to the lighthouse and enjoyed the awesome views, before heading to the Cape of Good Hope and the “Southwestern most point of Africa.”

Tuesday started with the District Six Museum, which is a powerful and disturbing; but not quite as disturbing as Robben Island, which I covered yesterday. After Robben Island, CQ and I caught the tram to the top of Table Mountain, where we wandered around for a spell and enjoyed the incredible scenery. It really is incredible. In the evening we caught a taxi across the city for dinner.

Today, after breakfast at the hotel, we headed out on the road to Cape Agulhas. Cape Agulhas is the southern-most point of Africa. That pretty well describes what we did today in a nutshell as the drive was quite lengthy. I made a point of walking between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans in the water—I’ve now waded in three oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian).

Cape Town has quickly leapt into my list of top-five global cities. The list, oddly, only has two entries currently: Vancouver and Cape Town.

Looking good Adam. It reminds me of the Colossus of Rhodes with legs astride from sea to sea.
Get a picture of CQ and threaten to publish it if he don’t call you master. LOL. You guys have fun!

Hi, Adam, you lucky stiff! I’d love to visit South Africa sometime! You get to go everywhere, and I’m just in Bloomington and Graz (mostly). Let me know when you’re back in Weimar.
