Local elections are coming up in Thüringen and serious campaigning has begun.
There are at least two strange things about the election.
First, and through no fault of the people who picked the dates, the election is June 7th, a mere two days after Obama visits. I suspect the timing means that local officials up for reelection or election who would love to have their photo taken with the American president will probably, instead, be kept at arms length, if not further.
Secondly, today I encountered “La Bamba” being sung in Marktplatz—interrupted by a message from the CDU—one of the two main political parties in Germany, but one of only many running for local office. Hearing La Bamba brought back bad memories from middle school (We watched La Bamba the movie in French class)—which made me evaluate the surroundings a bit more—off to the side of Weimar’s Rathaus the CDU had parked its hired bus—which, quite frankly, would discourage me from voting for them.
Its destination doesn’t appeal to me.
Oh, you have to send that photo of the bus to Failblog!
