Caffeine & Me

This ones decaf!

This one's decaf!

I’ve known for a long time that I have issues with caffeine.

Sometimes I’ve forgotten the consequences with awful consequences—like the time I couldn’t sit still for five hours after having had two cups of regular coffee in less than an hour. Or the occasions when I’ve had cups of coffee after lunch, then 12 hours later I’m exhausted, lying in bed wide awake wishing I could sleep.

Sometimes I wonder if I should become a Mormon—although they also believe in magic underwear and are, at least officially, against dudes sleeping with dudes.

My personal caffeine issues have been getting worse—I mean that I used to be able drink coffee at 1 or 2 and have no issues that night; then it became noon—and I fear that it’s slowly, but surely, moving earlier.

I bring this up because since returning from the States I’ve been suffering a bit from insomnia. It’s not the first time I’ve had issues—and so until it passes completely (I did sleep most of the way through last night), I’ve cut caffeine out of my life. No more regular coffee, no more caffeinated tea, no more Coke.

Once my insomnia passes, I’ll be willing to try caffeine again.

I hope it’s soon.

did u control for the weather effects ?? 😛
May be climate change is responsible for your insomnia! You should consult an expert!

I have exactly the same problem Adam – we’re getting old I think. I remember I used to just drink gallons of the stuff in my university days with no adverse effects. I can pretty much have 1 cup of coffee (max 2) before lunch and that’s it. The worst is when I take an afternoon nap (e.g. Sunday) and then drink coffee on waking – I can never fall asleep before midnight. Otherwise I’ve largely switched to decaf (or “fruit” tea).

  • Maybe your insomnia isn’t insomnia but jetlag.

  • Or the fact that the time changed?

Maybe the Mormon’s aren’t so bad after all. They send out young men two by two for a two year term and they live together and during that time cannot have sex with females. What do they think goes on?

  • I had the same problem. I used to drink 6, 7, 8 cups of coffee a day without the slightest effect and then, as if by magic, this April I couldn’t do it any more. I’d get palpitations, the shakes and I wouldn’t sleep half the night.

With that, I moved to drinking one cup of espresso in the morning (I still need the kick-start) and then I drink green tea the rest of the day. And you know what? I feel great! 🙂

(OK, I’ve gone vegetarian, exercise more and now meditate as well, so maybe that helped too!)

  • I can’t have caffeine either. I was reminded why one day when I ordered a drink at a cafe in the early afternoon and they mistakenly brought me a coffee. I was in no mood to argue so I just drank it. That night I woke up at 2am with my heart going off like a shot. Damn caffeine!
My mom has heart palpitations that scare the crap out of her but she refuses to stop drinking coffee! Maybe she doesn’t believe me….

  • I don’t know how to explain the insomnia, other than the fact that I’ve had it occasionally in the past.

As for the caffeine sensitivity, I’m pretty sure it’s genetic. My mother can only drink coffee in the morning and my sister has to avoid it in all forms–I think all of the time.

What?! No coffee!? I can’t imagine such a world!

  • i have had some caffeine issues as well lately- which is a shame because i used to be able to drink right up to bedtime. (i was raised in a three-pot-a-day household- there were 4 of us).

two nights ago i was working until 4, lying listlessly until 5.

might be time to switch to tea (upside: it is cheaper)
