Moral Dilemma | Moralisches Dilemma: What Would You Do?

So Thursday morning, about 8:45, I was on my way to Café Laden, stopping first at my bank to get money out, when I passed a school here in Weimar. I had my ear-buds in and was listening to the CBC World News at 6 (9pm Eastern Time edition) podcast.

After crossing Sophiensiftsplatz, from the in front of the school over to the National Theater (walking only when the Ampelmann said I could), I turned right walking toward Dingelstedtstrasse when I heard something loud landing on the street—I looked over and saw a plastic bottle rolling on the asphalt, and two open windows in the school building.

Naturally I took a photo.

But what to do now? I have the original that shows great detail as opposed to the reduced in size for web-viewing presented here.

Do you feel they were threatening you or other passersby? If yes, then definitely stop by and raise hell with the administration. Were they “just” littering or goofing off? Then it’s certainly wrong and annoying, but I’d let it go. I mean, if I had a dollar for every cigarette butt that people just toss or every pile of dog poop not picked up by owners…

Why be a freaking Rat? I mean trash-XXXX, are you kidding me? Or are you looking for a reason to get your ass kicked?

I’m not trying to insult you, but that’s the impression you’d give people by doing that. I recommend you have a beer and think about all the dumb things we all do in middle school that really seemed funny at the time.

(edited by Adam to delete a word, replaced with XXXX,)

    • Considering the context of the incident I have removed the pejorative you used; although it is acceptable in the US context, I am not comfortable with it being used in the German context.

Beyond that I do think that middle school students should be held accountable for their actions; one shouldn’t get a free ride for that kind of behavior at any age.

Ja, ich verstehe. Bei uns herrscht Ordnung, Jawohl!

Michele J: No, they were not threatening– it was just littering and goofing off–they left the cap on and were waiting for a car to drive over the bottle thus causing it to explode–which happened while I was in ear shot–I think it was as I was entering the bank, but it could have been as I was exiting the bank…

  • So eine Schweinerei! Was soll das?

That’s what I’d have yelled at them, then kicked the bottle to the kerb.
