Last Sunday: HH Fischmarkt Rather than spend a great deal of time writing up last Sunday, it is best captured in a few photographs—with a minor explanation to lead: Hamburg is famous for its Fischmarkt—which is held either really really late Saturday night (if you are the kind of person who stays up partying all night), or really really early Sunday morning. Mr. Letters Home and I opted for little-bit early Sunday morning, going to bed just past midnight and getting up at 6 in order to get to the Fischmarkt just after 7.
Tables filled with hockey fans drinking beer, Fischmarkt Hall, 0715
Fish is really for sale...
Notice the beer in this customer's hand--good decision making ahead...
The bearded man looked extra happy to be buying eel.
The seller just spotted somebody who glanced at his fruit basket -- 10€
By 9, the market was actually pretty crowded with sober people.

Is all the fishy part of the Markt indoors? That looks like something I’d like to check out, and Sarah would too, but only if the fishy part were contained in an area somewhere. She pretty much can’t stand the smells.
But we both love shopping in a new place. We’ve not been to Hamburg since we met anyone who lives there; it might be time for a trip back.
The fishy part of the Fischmarkt is outdoors — I don’t remember it smelling especially bad, except right in the area with actual fish stands–and even then it seemed pretty mild. It could be that it’s relatively cool in November.
Great photos!
Thanks!
