Product Localization A Step Too Far

The last couple of times that I’ve passed through the new Indianapolis International Airport terminal, I’ve noticed a cute “Cow-Tipping” t-shirt that plays on the notion that the only thing for bored teens on Friday nights in Indiana is to go out and tip nearby cows. I’ve actually thought about buying the t-shirt although I’m not really certain Germans would understand the folksy Indiana humor in the t-shirt.

Unfortunately I travel and on my trip to the States I also happened to pass through the Cincinnati airport—I wasn’t originally scheduled to do so, so it was purely random chance that this happened. As I was making my way to my connecting gate I noticed the same t-shirt for sale at the airport, but instead of featuring Indiana, it featured Ohio.

My interest in buying the t-shirt instantly vanished—even as I was wondering why the t-shirts featured Ohio for, as few people might not realize, the Cincinnati airport isn’t actually in Ohio. It’s in Northern Kentucky.

  • I can honestly say I’ve never tipped a cow.

  • If the service is bad I wouldn’t tip the cow, either.

  • Whoops, did I say that aloud? 🙂

  • Hahaha that’s kind of funny. I can’t imagine how a cow looks like when it’s being tipped.

  • OK,I’ll bite: what’s your point about Ohio depicted on a shirt being sold in Kentucky? That few people might not realize the airport serves Cincy but lies across the border in KY, as you write, would seem to make the geography a non-issue.

I suppose another irony of these shirts is the fact that neither Indianapolis nor Ohio are home to particularly large dairy operations (and, as far as I know, there are no ranches in either state)…

  • OK, then add that the whole thing is based on the “Nothing runs like a Deere” advertising slogan for John Deere, which is based in Illinois.

Yup, I’m a country girl. While I’ve never actually done the tipping, I have seen it done. It isn’t pretty, or especially funny for that matter.

  • cliff1976 – I’m sometimes overly pedantic, and this is a case where I am…

Snooker – I totally missed the “Nothing runs like a Deere”-I can’t believe it! I should have guessed it from the colors, but maybe I’ve been too detached from agriculture the last few years to pick up on it.
