It was with much sadness that we left the Shetland Islands.
In retrospect, if I had a do-over, I would keep the two nights on Unst, but extended the time in the lighthouse by at least two more nights.
Or, to put it succinctly, I would have cut out Inverness and the Highlands.
It’s not to say that we didn’t have a good time in Inverness and the Highlands, just that we were having a better time on the Shetlands.
Admittedly, I did spot Nessie – if you look carefully, you can see her in the photo below.

I was proud to spot Nessie. But I didn’t tell anybody at the time because a girl’s entitled to privacy!
Admittedly, we had a splendid time driving through the Scottish Highlands, visiting an old castle, and the Falls of Shin.

We stumbled on the Falls of Shin by chance. The visitor center had burned down 2.5 weeks before our visit.
But ultimately the Highlands didn’t seem to impress us the way that the Shetlands had.
With one exception – Thursday evening after dinner we stumbled into the Beauly Gallery, located in Beauly. Suffice it to say, by the time we were done with the Beauly Gallery Friday morning, the shop had done its best to empty our wallets and I personally emerged with a painting and a print that I then took to the nearby post office and shipped home.
Once I hang them, I’ll post photos of the art.
