By dint of life, my blog has become the place where, once a year, I publish my feelings and thoughts about Matthew Shepard and his murder in Laramie, Wyoming, back in 1998.
The thing is, of course, that I’ve captured feelings on my blog for over 20 years – and while I can rearrange the words, the core emotions that exist within me regarding Matthew Shepard, his murder, and the consequences thereof on me have not really change.
What I can say is that the week I spent in Laramie last October was worthwhile. Lots of interesting events commemorating the murder and its impact on the Laramie community. Lots of opportunity to reflect and bring myself to a better place, internally, with respect to everything – so I guess some progress.
The regression: Republican politics in Wyoming have taken an unfortunate turn and the university was compelled to eliminate most of its DEI programming.
The UW Poke Pride Center is… gone.
That angers me in a way that is difficult to express. I don’t blame the university, I blame Trump and the maga Republicans who have made it their mission to destroy anything that they do not understand.
For these people, ignorance is bliss; forcing others to be ignorant is even greater bliss.
I know things are cyclical – what is gone today will, hopefully, be back in the future. Hopefully nearer future than one might suppose. Wyoming was not always a deep red state.
But Enough about that.
Rest in Peace Matt.
