Whatchamacallit 41: Friedrichstraße as art

Berlin Friedrichstraße

This cute piece of art, featuring the dramatic glass dome over the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn station and a tram.

The fox is not normally seen in this environment, but I suppose that it might be seen there today. I wouldn’t know since I haven’t been near there in a long time.

I bought this last December at the Domäne Dahlem Christmas Market – one of the quaintest markets in Berlin and one of the few featuring locally made goods.

Most Christmas seasons, I barely hit the markets because the shit for sale is all mass produced in China and sold at exorbitant prices that I’m just not interested in paying.

However, this past December one of my artistic friends and her friends had a table at Domäne Dahlem selling their own goods – so I popped down early in the day, before it gets crowded. (The crowd size is yet another reason to skip most Christmas Markets – they tend to be stuffed cheek to jowl with people drinking glühwein. This is not something I have ever really found fun – long before the Covid-19 era.)

At her booth one of the friends was selling cute small paintings of Berlin, including this one: which I bought.

For now, it hangs on a nail just inside my front door – so I see it daily as I come in and out of my apartment. It is one of the few things I have that is explicitly about Berlin.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
