Whatchamacallit 75: Project Spurv: Underwear

Picture of underwear being pulled away from a man, with the base of the shaft showing.

The above image was a present from dear friends who found it for sale at the Lesbian and Gay Street Festival in Berlin during the summer of 2018.

They bought it directly from the artist, who had a booth at the festival. I saw the booth a grabbed a postcard from the artist, which is saved on the backside of the piece of art. While it lists a website, the website no longer works. However, it includes an artist’s statement (of sorts):

This image belongs to the homoerotic project Spurv. SPURV is a sexual playground for gay men. It’s a type of erotica with an artistic touch, where fetish, sex and imagination meet to create strong and powerful images.

Some careful googling suggests that the artist is from both Copenhagen and Barcelona – and there is an Etsy Spurv shop selling his work, where a version of this print, named “Underwear” sells for 20€.

The work currently hangs in my bedroom, adjacent to my wardrobe. Thus, I see it every morning while getting dressed and whenever I exit my bedroom.

In a word, this is one of those perfect presents – and something I adore more than I can fully express. While it is pretty obvious what is immediately going on in the print, the interpretation of the larger scene varies wildly among my friends. However, to tell you my interpretation might ruin your interpretation, so I don’t really want to say how I contextualize this image.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
