Whatchamacallit 84: Wyoming Press Association Announcement

WPA Flyer

Back when I started university, I wanted to be a journalist – so my first order of business was getting a job as a writer for the Branding Iron, the student newspaper.

I was pretty committed to the work, covering a wide variety of stories across the UW campus – and participating in extracurricular activities – like attending the Wyoming Press Association conventions and serving on the board of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association (or something like that; it does not seem to exist any longer).

The Wyoming Press Association conventions were interesting gatherings – and at the first gathering that I attended, the above flyer was included in the packet. I would guess it is from the spring of 1993, but I could be wrong; I might not have been eligible to attend the WPA convention as a freshman.

What an awesome flyer – it raises so many more questions than it answers.

If only there had been an unfortunate incident: my inquiring mind wanted answers and I asked too many questions, like a good journalist would.

There are a number of reasons why I decided against pursuing journalism, but the conventions were not one of them: I enjoyed learning from professionals, I enjoyed the networking aspects of the convention.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
