11 Hours, 10 Minutes

CQ and I are in Cape Town.

It was a relatively uneventful plane ride—I read Saturday’s Guardian, Sunday’s Observer, the weekend’s IHT, and part of an Economist.

The IFE provided me with “Letters from Iwo Jima”, the follow up to Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers.” I’d watched “Flags of Our Fathers” on my way to New York City and found the film quite moving—Americans can be so great in one breath and then turn around and be such assholes—something that was also vividly demonstrated in “Letters from Iwo Jima”. I would highly recommend both films, they make a good pair of films examining war from both the victor and loser’s perspectives.

Afer landing, CQ and I made our way through immigration, out customs and to the car rental desk where we picked up a car and I started driving.

On the left.

With a stick.

Now the pedals of the car were in the same position as the cars I am used to and the stick had first gear in the same position. However the turn signal was on the opposite side of the steering wheel and, consequently, I turned the windshield wipers each time I wanted to change lanes.

Sharp Sharp!!

Whenever I drive down our narrow main street, I wonder if maybe we shouldn’t drive on the other side like the British and their former possessions. People open their car doors out into the oncoming vehicles.
Enjoy Africa and taking CQ for a ride. LOL.
