PDA

Cultural differences between the US and Germany are often subtle.

That’s not to say there aren’t the major differences that are often quickly obvious such as the smoking that is omnipresent, the love of Döner, and high quality everyday beers.

What I have noticed, and its taken me awhile to do so, is the acceptance of PDA (for the Germans reading this: Public Displays of Affection). What’s funny about the omni-presence of PDA is that you don’t notice it too often at first. What I mean by this, is that when I first moved here, back in August, I saw PDA, but never really paid attention to it. I probably thought the people were horny teenagers, or teenager wannabes who happened to be horny.

But the longer I’ve been around, the more I’ve noticed PDA.

It’s not that I see people French Kissing everyday, but that I see it once every couple of weeks. The most recent occurrence was at the beginning of this week. I was riding the train from Weimar to Jena, and in a pair of seats facing me, but across the aisle, there was a couple.

At first, I paid no attention to them.

I looked up from my work-I am incredibly productive on the train, for some reason-and noticed them kissing. I looked back up at my work. Every time I looked up for the remainder of the train ride, they were engaged in some form of PDA.

I tried not to look up any more than I had to, but still, at some point it’s like a car accident. You have to gawk.

Here’s the thing: I don’t see it every day-but I do see it-and at a rate which is much greater than in the States. I’ll probably get to witness another session of PDA sometime in the next week. Hopefully it won’t be too bad a case, but there have been times I’ve sworn that the couple was about ready to have sex in front of me.

And to that, I have to say? Jeeeeeeeeeesus! Please, get a room.

  • Just a random update on this subject. Today (Saturday), I went over to Erfurt to do some shopping. Over lunch I was compelled to share a table with strangers. The couple across from me kissed a lot while eating.

    UGH!
