Obamania

Eat an Amerikaner Cookie with Obama!

Eat an Amerikaner Cookie with Obama!

It’s still not clear whether or not President Obama will be visiting Weimar or not. I’m not privy to any insider information, but it’s my impression that the president will visit Buchenwald and then leave the area–which would be a shame. Not only would I not be able to see the president from any closer than my bedroom window, he would miss seeing the city.

Weimar is far more (despite my constant kidding) than just Buchenwald: it’s Goethe, it’s Schiller, and it’s the heart of positive German culture.

I wandered around town last week, taking pictures of Obamania–in some respects there is surprisingly little, but what there is, is vibrant.

The travel agent has a generic USA promotion, but presto, a picture of Obama with the message Yes, We Can makes it welcoming.

  • From the Reuters diary – what’s coming up in the next few weeks (available online)

    FRIDAY, JUNE 5
DRESDEN, Germany- U.S. President Barack Obama visits German city
of Dresden and the Buchenwald concentration camp complex, which
was set up by the Nazis during World War Two.-

So no mention anymore of Weimar.

Maybe if you popped over to Dresden???

  • Certainly a much different reception than his predecessor would have gotten!

  • tomorrow there will also be a special edition of the rathaus kurier. cover: obama. “yes WE can!”

we so want him to visit weimar.

  • Pseudowife´s roommate

Apparently Obama´s schedule has been cut down to just Dresden, Buchenwald and some other german town. In Buchenwald he´ll be just two hours talking to Holocaust-survivors and then move on to the next town on the agenda. No Weimar city or the Anna Amalia library as originally intended. No time. Shame…

  • @ian, pseudowife’s roommate: this sucks 🙁

@CQ: His predecessor wouldn’t have come.

@Anki: Is there anything we can do to get him to come here?

  • we could decorate the rathause into the white house and hope he doesn’t realize the mimicry.
