Asparagus

In one of these strange random occurrences, two incidents in my real world, combined with the updating of my blog links, and another person?s real world experience has added up to a nice coincidence.

My first incident in the real world: Last week the chef at the office made Chicken Noodle Soup for lunch (or as it was translated into English, “Noodle Soup with Chicken Breast,” I’d put the German here, but I don’t know how to spell it, but I can say it). It was good and filling – and she served enormous portions of it, so there was no way I could go away hungry. As I was poking through the soup, I observed plenty of chicken, lots of carrots, and other assorted vegetables. I pulled one of them out and asked my dining companions, “What is this?”

“Asparagus.”

“Oh,” I replied. “It’s not that I hate the taste of asparagus, I just hate the after effect.”

The other people at the table looked blank. I dropped the subject not wishing to engage in a discussion of bodily functions while eating lunch. Sure enough, later that afternoon I popped into the toilet and I recognized the after effects of asparagus.

My blog updating: I added Dan to my list of Favorite Links over the weekend. For those of you unfamiliar with Dan Renzi he was on Real World: Miami. I don’t remember much about the show, but for whatever reason, I once found his blog, added it to my bookmarks, and looked at it about once a month. Now that I’ve added it to my web site, I look at it daily (as I do for most links on my front page).

My second incident in the real world: I was trying to decide if I was going to eat in the cafeteria this morning, so I was talking to M about recent dishes served by the chef. I told her that I’d liked Monday’s Gyros Soup and that I also liked last week’s “Chicken Noodle Soup,” except for the asparagus.

An hour or so later, I was taking a break from proof reading something when I surfed on over to Dan’s site and found out that he too had a real world encounter with asparagus.

Random coincidence? I left a comment on his blog, and I got an email from him.

Süß!

Another Random “Real World” Coincidence: I just finished rereading Judd Winick’s Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, and What I Learned this weekend. Judd and Pedro were on Real World: San Francisco — Pedro being HIV positive. Everytime I read the book I cry. This was no exception–although I admit, crying on the train was a first.
