German News

It’s been awhile since I’ve really talked about anything here in Germany, so I thought that perhaps it was time to do a review of recent news and events here in Deutschland.

First up, is the weather. It’s been cold and rainy all weekend long. Unpleasantly so. I had a fantasy of heading outside this morning. Instead I listened as the rain splashed against the window. I realize this is mundane, but at the moment, my body is noticing it. It’s 15°C right now. 59°F for the Americans.

Next: I live in a police surveillance state. One of my friends (I would identify you but I cannot get to my email right now), sent me an email announcing that “German Police Keep Secret Database On Gays.” I read the article and discovered that my local police are amongst those who are tracking “homosex” in their computer databases-databases that have the ability to track meeting places, or specific sexual practices. I am going to do my best to get the coveted “S&M / Public Park / Golden Showers / teabagging / fisting / uniform fetish” listing. To help me, show up in a police uniform with a can of lard down at the park tonight. I’ll be under the bridge.

Finally, next weekend is World Youth Day over in Köln-a celebration of all thing Catholic, including a visit from Pope Hitler Youth. Before anybody bashes me for calling him Hitler Youth-he was. I don’t blame him for that since all kids of his generation were required to be Hitler Youth. What I blame him for is his military service. I understand that it too was obligatory and difficult to escape. Rather I was upset when I read why Pope Hitler Youth hadn’t fired a shot against the allies:

Ratzinger has insisted he never took part in combat or fired a shot – adding that his gun was not even loaded – because of a badly infected finger. (The Times)

To me, this echoes Rush Limbaugh’s pilonidal cyst (ingrown hair on your ass) excuse for missing the Viet Nam War. Both are bullshit excuses. Limbaugh is a chickenhawk, and Ratzinger is a Nazi. Ratzinger could have resisted and chose not to. He could have resisted.
