On the Downside of Living Alone

Although I do not really mind being single, I do mind living alone.

Here’s the downside of living alone: I have to do everything.

  • Laundry: Me.
  • Hanging wet laundry: Me
  • Folding and putting away clean clothes: Me
  • Going grocery shopping: Me
  • Cooking dinner: Me
  • Washing dishes: Me
  • Putting away dry dishes: Me
  • Cleaning out the refrigerator: Me
  • Washing the kitchen counters: Me
  • Scrubbing the bathtub and sink: Me
  • Cleaning the toilet: Me
  • Washing clean the fan blades: Me
  • Paying bills: Me
  • Vacuuming: Me
  • Changing the vacuum bag: Me (and man, I should have done it sooner)
  • Taking out the trash: Me
  • Taking stuff to the recycling bins: Me

And sometimes it’s uglier.

  • Chasing pigeon out of apartment: Me

There are times I wish I could convince my roommate to do some of these chores, and then I realize that I’m my own roommate. And I don’t actually want a roommate.

But while you’re over, could you please make the bed?

  • So who cleans your oven? 🙂

  • Unless you manage to find a really compatible roomie, they’re usually more trouble than help.

  • Ian- uf duh- a task I should probably undertake. sigh. Chores never end.

starman1695- I value my privacy and my alone time too much to have a roommate; and my current apartment is roommate unfriendly. It might be boyfriend friendly, but that’s a different issue.

  • Think about it this way… if you share the place with someone then you might end up splitting tasks, but your tasks will actually become larger. For example, if you get to do laundry, then you will now be doing laundry for two people. The way I see it, if I live alone, then I am making my own messes, so I should clean them up. If you are living with someone often you get to clean up their messes as well. (WHAT! HAIR IN THE SINK AGAIN! ARGH!)

  • Gee, all you had to do was ask. 😉

  • Snooker – Some tasks multiply in size (e.g. laundry); some are easier like cooking–I find cooking more interesting when its for multiple people than just for me.

Cynical Queer – Please come back.
