Like Clockwork: Every Six Years I… Move

It’s official: In the near future I will vacate my dream apartment in Weimar for new pastures in Berlin.

I’ve been offered a job in Berlin and after a brief moment of consideration (three-tenths of a second), I’ve accepted. However in keeping with my policy of not discussing work on my blog, I will only say that the new position is a significant upgrade and I am looking forward to starting work in Berlin.

For the next month I will be giving up my current apartment, finding a new apartment, moving, and starting my new job. It’s a lot to do in a short amount of time, but I am confident of my ability to complete it all in time and retain my sanity.

The prospect of being able to see two of my favorite bloggers (50% of my DNA and Snooker in Berlin) regularly is more exciting than I can possibly coherently express. The prospect of new neighborhoods to explore, new stores to shop, and new festivals to photograph on the weekends is also more exciting than I can possibly coherently express.

Naturally I have many regrets: I will deeply miss my friends and colleagues in Weimar, Jena, and Erfurt. My Monday evening cooking party with Anke will have to stop. Bumping into my Weimar Colleague with his son on Schillerstraße will no longer happen. The Weimar Office will be too far away for daily work. My office colleague and occasional photography buddy will no longer be so handy. Keeping up with Michele, Cathy, and Antonio in person will be impossible.

However this is a natural moment to move for as noted above, I’ve moved cities every six years: when I turned 18 I moved to Laramie, Wyoming. Bloomington, Indiana, came at 24, and 30 turned into Weimar. In that sense I feel that I am keeping in rhythm maintaining, ironically enough, the status quo.

For those of you close enough to come, I’m tentatively planning on a housewarming party in the first half of August.

  • Woot! I know where I’m spending my spring break (if you’ll have me, that is).

  • Reko

Wow! It’s like my little Adamo is moving to the big city!!!

  • Congratulations! By co-incidence, we will be in Germany in August (I hope).

and they have Mexican food in berlin. yay. Congrats.

  • I’m sure you’ll soon find a Berlin office that is not your actual office. Of course, it’s going to be much more difficult to casually run into friends when you’re out and about since Berlin is such a large city.

Big D and I look forward to coming to visit. 🙂

  • To use your phrase, I’m close enough to come. But then, I usually am.

(Berlin will offer many more opportunities for that sort of thing, will it not?)

Love and congrats from the south.

Yay, Adam! Chaz and I wish you the best of luck! Hope all goes smoothly with the move, and that you love your new job. Maybe we will actually come visit you there if you end up staying for six years. It will probably take us that long just to get the passports and save up enough money! heh! Once again, congrats, and warmest wishes for your new adventure!!!

Oh, *yeah* – remember the Koolaid commercials? Another reason for us to come to Berlin. Congrats!

Adam, it took entirely toooo long for that job to come through. I was nervous for you, and it was working my last nerve!

Berlin is waiting… has been since your first Hustlaball!
I’ve a bottle of Champagne waiting to christen your new place. 🙂

  • Einfach wunderbar! And Snooker – hoping Baby #2 is here so I can also partake in “real” toasting of your new crib! 🙂
