A long, long time ago, when I first looked at the March calendar, I knew that this weekend needed to be a weekend alone – a respite from roughly two months of travel and guests.
It was sometime in November when I realized that the period between January 17 and March 17 were going to be so jam packed with crap, that I would need some time to myself.
To recap, since January 17 I have been to Denver, Fargo, and Bloomington. A mere 43 hours after I returned, my brother arrived for roughly two weeks. I then had a regular week of work before I headed to Las Vegas for a weekend. On my way back to Berlin there was an unscheduled detour to Denver to be with my family—and then I returned to Berlin – where I had a few days before MT arrived for her whirlwind week in Berlin. The day after she left, David Sedaris was in town and I was in the front row.
I knew (most of) this back in November and was eager to keep this specific weekend as clear of stuff as possible – although I managed to let two things onto my calendar: a date with Yelli and an art gallery opening. The former was pretty “set in stone”, the latter was dependent upon me finding somebody to go with—which I gave up on doing Thursday morning.
It was Thursday morning when I realized that I was on the downhill side of some kind of illness and that I was suddenly, in a word, disgusting.
I skipped work Thursday – cancelling three appointments. As I noted last time, two of the three wrote back to me to inform me that had I not cancelled, they would have. One because he was sick; the other because her daughter was sick. Friday I struggled into the office, only for the morning, before returning home and falling asleep around 1pm for roughly 4 hours. I cancelled Friday night before Yelli could cancel.
So ultimately I ended up with the weekend that I wanted – when I first thought about this weekend back in November: home, alone, and restful.
It has actually been rather nice – I’ve watched a ton of DVDs – Up in the Air, episodes of Skins, and some other random bad, but fun, crap.
That said, I had already started imaging this weekend to be spring cleaning – from bathroom, through the kitchen, stopping off in the kitchen and the bedroom, I was planning on dusting, vacuuming, and washing windows in order to make the place spic and span.
But I didn’t – I only washed and ironed my shower curtain.
Spring cleaning will wait for next weekend – as I start to prepare for my next guest.
I’m glad to hear that you’re well now and that you got a relaxing week-end in the end! There are some really dodgy things going around right now (I had one last week-end and it knocked me for six!) I guess that rest is the best cure for this sort of thing!
You IRONED your shower curtain?! Erm, maybe you could do with some travel and/or guests!
Emily- Thanks! I think a lot of my office was sick.
Irish Berliner – I ironed it because the instructions on it specifically said to iron it after washing it and I assume that Ikea knows best!
How as Up in the Air? I’ve heard mixed reviews about it.
Up in the Air is excellent — really really wonderful.
