I can’t wait for the weekend to begin!

Happily, for me, another workweek is closed.

Yes, I know, it’s only Thursday, but I have a guest in town for the next two weeks and tomorrow morning we are going out of Berlin for a long weekend. I’d tell you where, but that might ruin some of the surprise—suffice to say, we’re flying Air Berlin to somewhere on their European route map—and, to help you eliminate possibilities, I am flying to an airport I have never flown to before.

Ha!

Today was interesting for a number of reasons – whilst my guest was busy playing tourist (Hallo Schloss Charlottenburg!), I was busy at the office.

It started with an early morning meeting (9:30), a rush job, and some thoughtful work on a project that I need to get finished sometime in the next week (it’s the oldest item in my queue, having never been assigned a particularly high priority for one reason or another—it’s been on hold since mid-February). Fortunately it is interesting I will be done with it relatively quickly.

The city center was a bit abuzz – my bus to work was slowed by a long parade of police vans, and when I stopped by a colleague’s office, he was wondering why there was so much police presence around the office – when I’d arrived at 8 there was none, but, apparently, at 9 there was a lot.

I didn’t have an answer, but I found out later that NATO was having meetings in Berlin today—somewhere relatively close by to my office. I confirmed this, later, at the gym while doing cardio—I’ve taken to watching (but not listening to) either BBC World News or CNN. In the midst of the BBC broadcast, they mentioned the NATO meeting and I recognized the building immediately.

I can honestly say that as an adult I’ve never before recognize where I live as the subject of international news – not Laramie (it became infamous after I left), not Bloomington, and not Weimar.

Just Berlin.

I’m quite jealous of your upcoming long weekend away. And sadly, for me…my work week begins today through sunday morning. such is life I suppose…have fun!!

That is always pretty wild to see your work surroundings on international news. I was living in Seattle during the WTO protests and riots of 1999, and it totally blew my mind that I worked downtown right in the middle of it all, and then to see my building randomly on the news. My office shut down for a day because of it, and it was crazy seeing all the destruction in the city after it was over. Anyway…long story. LOL. 🙂

  • koko – survive the weekend, then you can party while I’m working….

Jen – it’s what I get for living in Berlin — lots of tourists walk past my office every day — I dodge them when I eat lunch.
