Commentary on the Women’s World Cup, Part 1 of

At the office Friday afternoon, as I was leaving, I stuck my head in to say good-bye for the weekend to one of my football (as in soccer) loving colleagues. I know he’s a football fan because last summer he watched all of the football matches, live from South Africa.

This year the Women’s World Cup is being held here in Germany, and the opening match is tonight, Sunday night, here in Berlin. I know this thanks to the Canadian news that I regularly listen to and the game is between Canada and Germany.

Knowing my colleague’s interest in football, I told him that I hope he enjoyed the game Sunday evening.

“I’m not watching,” he replied.

“What,” I said, somewhat shocked and surprised. “I thought you liked women, but I guess you like guys, like me.”

He laughed.

  • Womens football doesnt seem to interest many people and thats a bit unfair. The style, compared to the mens game, is often very different.

I cant even find the games on British TV!
