Whatchamacallit 12: Café du Monde by (Geri) Haywood

Cafe du Monde

This painting represents New Orleans and is on the wall of my kitchen.

In my few quick minutes of googling, I cannot find any information about the artist, Haywood – other than the fact that her first name is Geri. She works in New Orleans, which makes sense: this is clearly New Orleans – showing Café du Monde on Decatur Street, with its famous café au lait (made with chicory) and beignets.

The picture is clearly visible as I walk into my kitchen – with its food theme it belongs there and not elsewhere.

New Orleans is one of my three favorite US cities (not counting Denver, but Denver is an odd duck for a number of reasons): First, Portland, Oregon; Second: New Orleans; Third: San Diego. These are cities I would move back to willingly if I suddenly had to leave Germany.

With its food, New Orleans sets the standard for America. Honestly, I cannot remember ever having had a bad meal in the city – rather I remember countless good meals, including my favorite, incredibly messy, BBQ Shrimp at Mr. B’s Bistro. I’ve had it twice.

I hope the city and its people make it through the Covid-19 crisis with its spirit intact.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
