Whatchamacallit 13: Wool from the Shetland Islands

Wool from the Shetland Islands

Back in 2013, I went to the Shetland Islands, which was one of my top vacations of all time. From visiting the northern most point of the United Kingdom (Baltasound), where I ate some of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. Later, I slept in a lighthouse (Eshaness).

Overall, I generally had an amazing time – and the trip affected my daily life in an expensive way: I discovered wool.

The wool above was free: I collected it off of fence posts and wherever while on the Shetland Islands – the islands are home to many sheep (and ponies), whose wool is turned into sweaters and scarves. I brought the wool back home and stuck it in this glass bottle: I look at it semi-regularly, opening it maybe once a year (hello today!).

The expensive part of this discovery is that I now own and wear wool socks – year-round. (Hello Darn Tough!) Plus I wear a variety of wool sweatshirts and have collected several wool scarves, which (I must admit) with global warming are infrequently worn.

But that is beside the point – the wool brings back all these positive, warm, memories of these islands filled with incredibly friendly people, amazing food, and consistently amazing scenery.

Maybe I should go back.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
