Whatchamacallit 16: A WMF Spatula

Spatula by WMF

This is my second German spatula and it proves that strategically spending more money can sometimes pay off.

The first spatula started melting – never a good sign – back in Weimar, back when I had limited funds. I complained about it to a friend who then promptly guided me to a shop on Schillerstraße that sold WMF products and where I bought this spatula.

I have no clue how much it cost, but it cost something more than an average spatula but has repaid the favor by living for well over a decade; thus, it speaks highly to the quality of WMF.

It has cooked more food than I can recall, most recently yesterday’s main meal of pan-fried chicken that was subsequently served in buns, thus a sort of chicken burger? The meal was adequate – not adventurous. The spatula did its job.

It does so efficiently and quietly: I rarely think about the spatula actively – I grab it, use it, wash it, put in on the drying rack, then put it away; repeat as needed.

The fact that I do not think about it is, in its own way, bliss.

Clearly, I had been thinking about is predecessor when I complained about it to my friend.

Here’s to another decade of not thinking about my spatula.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.

I think that is the difference between the US and Germany…in US you would buy a cheap spatula and just replace it. In Germany you pay more for an item you will use forever.
