Whatchamacallit 34: Obama 2012 Button

Barack Obama 2012 Button

This button, which is attached to the bulletin board that hangs in the hallway to my kitchen, is a reminder of a better – no – great America: an America that could see a better future for everybody.

I really do not want to harp on how bad Donald Trump has been, is, or will be – rather, I want to look back at a moment in history when America was a respected country, a country whose leader was above reproach, a country that provided hope to the world.

Obama was not a perfect president – there are some things that I wish he had done better – but he was trying to nudge things better – even if incrementally positive change is something that frustrates big visionaries.

Seeing this button on my way to and from the kitchen provides me these moments.

I’ve also donated $1,200 to the Biden for President campaign – the amount of the stimulus check that I will soon be receiving.

I consider it an investment in the future.

I’d order campaign swag, but political campaigns are loathe to ship materials out of the country since they assume that every purchase from abroad is from a foreigner. I could only make a donation to the campaign by including my passport number (apparently required by the FEC; amusingly I cannot even access the FEC website from Germany).

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
