Whatchamacallit 35: Lederer Bier

Lederer Bier

I don’t know how I first learned about Lederer Bier, but I must have learned about it shortly after moving to Germany in 2004, because in 2005, I made a point of going to Nürnberg to eat at the Lederer Biergarten in August.

It’s always exciting to find something with your name on it, especially when your name is rare and obscure, much like mine. My stock of things Lederer include this bottle of beer, a backup bottle, and a glass. The beer is, I promise, ancient and disgusting.

This is not much different from when you drink this beer fresh: it is a pilsner and I do not like pilsners. In German terms, I prefer drinking hefeweizen – a wheat beer.

Whenever I am in Nürnberg, I do make a point of drinking at least one of my beers – I don’t actually know why. Maybe it’s just to celebrate the fact that it exists. I’ve eaten at the Biergarten two or three times now – it’s best on one of those lazy summer afternoons when it’s hot outside and you don’t really want to move around much. Unfortunately, the food they serve is the typically heavy German sorts – bratwurst, Bavarian sausages, and potato salad.

The last time I was in Nürnberg it was Christmas Market season – biergartens were the furthest thing from my mind…

However, Google Maps reports that the biergarten is permanently closed – so maybe I can never visit it again.

Hmmmm…

I’ll be saving my souvenirs.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I am going to try and make a point of writing a blog post about an object in my home.

We’ll see how long this lasts.
