I’m writing these Whatchamacallits in the afternoon before the day it gets posted, after I finish my Homeoffice duties.
Basically, my idea is that I wander to a different space within my apartment and find something worth talking about. I am trying to not feature the same space two days in a row: I […]
Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall falling.
It’s interesting – for the first time, that I can recall, I was asked what I was doing when I heard that the wall had opened – and it occurred to me that I really have no memory of the event, when it happened.
Me and the South Korean Guard – I’m standing in North Korea
The last stop in Seoul for me was the DMZ – the space between North and South Korea where tensions are highest.
Except for me, the tension did not seem that great.
I took a tour from the “Service Club” – www.tourdmz.com […]
I realize, as I write this, that I am not about to post something that many of my Berlin friends will like, but I feel like saying it anyway.
But first — the East Side Gallery, a 1.3 kilometer long piece of the Berlin wall, is going to have a 22 meter piece taken out […]
While Koko was visiting, I took a couple days off of work to join her in visiting Berlin tourist sites and was quickly reminded of how Germany is the perfect place to live if you love to hate where you are, and at the same time love to love where you are.
It’s rather simple, […]
Last night I met up with Snooker in Berlin and saw Aus Anderer Sicht: Die frühe Berliner Mauer – or The Other View: The Early Berlin Wall.
Honestly this is one of the best exhibitions I’ve seen in a long time – it’s the kind of exhibition where I lost track of time. I literally […]
I’d tell you about what I did in Las Vegas, but… as the Las Vegas tag line goes, “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas.”
So I have nothing else to say.
Ha.
Not really, but let me be clear: Las Vegas’ initial impression, as I found at the airport, is not inviting. From Slot […]
Today I crossed a line—an important line—by moving into my own apartment.
I’ve moved from Kreuzberg to Schöneberg, from a hippy-left-wing-trash-on-the-streets, drug-dealers-in-the-park, earthy neighborhood to a more sedate neighborhood where the streets are clean, and it’s quiet.
Seriously, I am sitting at my dining room table, it’s 8:15, and I cannot hear a single stereo. […]
So it’s Monday and today I went to work at my new job for the first time—well, not really.
I actually went in to the future office so that I could sign my contract and hand over some documents that are needed for employment, plus to collect the documents I need to get registered with […]
News from October 1989.
A few years ago I spotted on Flickr some photographs of an old Soviet military base located near Weimar. Thursday I finally made the trek out there with a friend—he with his sophisticated film camera, me with my crappy point and shoot digital camera.
I’d show you his pictures, but […]
