Hopping West Across the Pacific

Leaving Honolulu meant leaving the 50 States – and since I chose United Airlines Flight 154 – I was going to get a whole lot of flying in that day.

Reboarding UA154 heading west from Majuro.

UA 154 is the westbound Island Hopper, going from Honolulu to Majuro to Kwajalein to Kosrae to […]

Cape Town: One of my favorite cities on the planet

November was spent going around the world, with my first stop being Cape Town. I had two goals: quality time on the beach and visiting a township.

Both were accomplished: I spent a day at Sandy Bay Beach. Although I’d picked a B&B close to the beach – Chapman’s Peak Bed and Breakfast – […]

TB or not TB – Baum & Zeit at Beelitz-Heilstätten

A couple weekends ago, I met up with one of my colleagues and headed out to Beelitz-Heilstätten, out on the southwestern edge of Berlin.

Beelitz-Heilstätten is a very well known site for explorers of abandoned buildings – it’s a site with a plethora of buildings that have, to be blunt, seen better days. Back […]

What I’ve been reading: 24 through 30…

Four of the books on this list were read in physical form!

Ah… I’ve been reading. And reading – but not as much as I’ve read before.

It turns out that I left a book off of my last list, so book 24 wasn’t the XYZ Affair, it was Men in the Sun.

[…]

2015 #Books Number 2, 3, and 4 (plus 5)

Ah… now that I’m feeling better, I thought it was time to update everybody on what I’ve read – since I am keeping track of books that I read in 2015.

Book number two was, as I feared, embarrassing: BAMF (SJD Peterson; Kindle) – a gay romance novel. Unfortunately it was not particularly well written. […]

25 Years Later: I have no idea where I was when the Berlin Wall fell.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall falling.

It’s interesting – for the first time, that I can recall, I was asked what I was doing when I heard that the wall had opened – and it occurred to me that I really have no memory of the event, when it happened.

49 States… plus DC and Guam

Me at the Southern Most Point of the 50 United States.

One of my long-term goals is to visit all 50 United States.

Such a stereotypical photo of Hawaii, eh?

My 49th State was Hawaii – time zone speaking 12 (now 11) hours different from Germany. Honolulu was supposed to be a non-stop […]

News from 40 Years Ago, Today — As seen in tomorrow’s New York Times

Cover of The New York Times, February 5, 1974. Late City Edition. 15 Cents.

So, forty years ago tomorrow, the headlines covering today’s news focus on gas rationing in New Jersey, President Nixon offering a budget, and China renewing its Cultural Revolution. Miners in Britain also voted overwhelmingly (81%!) to strike.

There’s also […]

Reliving My Childhood: Visiting Durango, riding the Durango & Silverton Railroad.

The 8:45 heading north.

Back in the 1980s my Uncle – a great man who has since passed on – arrived in Denver to take me on a trip: We flew from Denver to Durango on an Aspen Airways Convair. In Durango we stayed at the Strater Hotel and, as the main featured activity, […]

I’ve ridden all six BVG Ferry Routes, from End-to-End

As I noted two weeks ago, Berlin’s public transportation network includes ferries – and in my first three years of living here, I never had occasion to take one. But then, once I learned that F24 is a rowboat, I decided to ride.

And some how, since I rode two ferry routes that back on […]
